NJCAA Board approves volleyball championship adjustments

Charlotte, NC - Following the 2022 NJCAA Convention held in Birmingham, AL, from April 11-15, the NJCAA Board of Regents passed a number of amendments to enhance the national championship experience.  The following changes were made for all divisions of volleyball. 

Division I Volleyball

The NJCAA DI Volleyball Committee approved two proposals impacting national tournament play.  The first proposal will add a day of competition to the current three-day national tournament.  The change will allow participating teams to limit the number of games that are played per day in an effort to increase recovery time for student-athletes. The second proposal approved by the committee will increase the number of at-large selections chosen to compete in the national tournament.  Beginning with the 2023 season, the NJCAA DI Volleyball Championship will feature 12 automatic district qualifiers and four at-large selections over four days of competition. The 2023 NJCAA DI Volleyball Championship will be held at the Hutchison Sports Arena in Hutchinson, KS.  The 2022 championship will be held under the current three-day format and qualification structure at the West Plains Civic Center in West Plains, MO from November 17-19, 2022.   

Division II Volleyball

The NJCAA DII Volleyball Committee approved a proposal to expand the national tournament to a 20-team bracket.  The national tournament will feature 16 automatic district qualifiers with an additional four at-large selections.  The new tournament format will add nine games and one additional day of competition to the national tournament.  The expanded national tournament field will take effect during the 2023 season.  The 2022 championship will be played under the current 16-team format from November 17-19, 2023 at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse Arena in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Division III Volleyball  

The NJCAA DIII Volleyball Committee approved a proposal to expand the national tournament to a 16-team bracket.  The national tournament will feature 12 automatic district qualifiers with an additional four at-large selections.  The new tournament format will add seven games to the three-day national tournament.  The expanded national tournament field will take effect during the 2023 season.  The 2022 championship will be played under the current 12-team format from November 10-12 at the Rochester Regional Sports Center in Rochester, MN.
