Miami Dade Captures NJCAA DI Softball Title
ST. GEORGE, Utah -- Miami Dade pitcher Erika Bennett saved her best performance for her final junior college game as she fired a one-hit shutout to help lead the Lady Sharks to the NJCAA Division I softball national championship with a 7-0 victory over Wallace State CC Saturday afternoon at the Canyons Complex. The national title is the first for Miami Dade (51-7), while Wallace State (62-9) finished second for the second-straight year after winning the NJCAA title in 2008.
Bennett, who named tournament MVP, fanned five and faced one batter over the minimum in seven innings complete, only giving up a lone infield single to WSCC infielder Cortney McNett in the fourth inning.
Meanwhile the Shark offense gave Bennett plenty of support as MDC pounded out 12 hits, including three home runs, beginning with a Veronika Fukunishi solo homer that broke a scoreless tie as part of a two-run fourth inning. Kristen Exposito followed that up with a two-run blast in the fifth, and Ashley Silveira closed the scoring with a pinch-hit two-run homer in a three-run seventh frame. Miami Dade head coach Carlos Caro won the tournament's Karen L. Sykes Outstanding Coach award.
Fukunishi, who also earned all-tourney honors, led MDC with three hits, including double to go with her homer, while Exposito, Amanda Lara and Rebecca Hall had two safeties apiece. In addition, infielder Simone Suetsugu, utility player Geovanny Nunez and catcher Vivian Morimoto were named to the all-tournament team.
WSCC hurler Kelsey Dennis, who named to the all-tournament team for the second-straight year, suffered the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits with two strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work. Dennis was joined on the all-tournament team by WSCC infielder Jessica Graves and outfielder Summer Wilkerson.
