Harper sweeps Ridgewater for first DIII championship

ROCHESTER, Minn. – Harper (Ill.) claimed its first NJCAA Division III volleyball championship Saturday with a 25-21, 25-22, 25-19, sweep of Ridgewater (Minn.).  

  • Harper was led offensively by nine kills from Kathryn Novy.
  • Kayla Mayer recorded a match-high 22 digs for the Hawks.
  • The Harper attack was directed by Katelyn Sommers who posted 27 assists.
  • The Hawks finish the season with a 43-1 overall record, winning their last 20 matches.
  • In two days, Harper beat No. 8 seed Queensborough (N.Y.), No. 4 seed Central Lakes (Minn.) and No. 2 seed Ridgewater.
  • Tournament MVP honors were presented to Harper middle blocker Sarah Udoni.
  • Hawks’ all-tournament selections include Ellie Burzlaff, Novy and Sommers.
  • Harper won 9 of 10 sets at the national tournament, dropping one frame to Central Lakes in the semifinals.
  • Ridgewater’s Ashley Froelich and Kiana Johnson each scored in double-figures with 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
  • Jamie Goblirsch contributed a team-high 15 digs in the Warriors' losing effort.
  • Ridgewater fell to 26-6 for the year, winning 16 of its last 18 matches.
