TUCSON, Ariz. – Claiming victory in all nine flights of competition, ASA (N.Y.) cruised to victory in the NJCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Championship. En route to their program’s second straight national title, the Avengers became the first team to sweep the event since Midland (Texas) in 1991 – the first year of divisional play in NJCAA women’s tennis.
Leading the way for ASA was freshman Macarena Olivares who earned the No. 1 singles crown with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Tyler (Texas) sophomore Joanna Nena-Savva. Olivares went on to win No. 1 doubles as well, teaming with fellow freshman Megane Bianco to defeat sophomores Marla Paula Coyos and Paula Lopez of Seward County (Kan.), 6-0, 6-0. Bianco was victorious in No. 2 singles, claiming a 6-2, 6-2 win over Tyler freshman Elizabeth Bagerbaseh.
Freshman Tyler Smith clinched No. 3 singles for the Avengers with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Tyler sophomore Katie Delgado. In No. 4 singles, ASA freshman Mingxiu Du defeated Tyler sophomore Paige Murdock by a score of 6-0, 6-2. The tandum of Smith and Du came together in No. 2 doubles for a 6-2, 6-1 win over freshman Amiena Houston and sophomore Natella Nabieva from State College of Florida.
ASA freshman Simone Pratt coasted to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Tyler sophomore Adriana Garrett for the No. 5 singles title. In No. 6 singles, Avengers freshman Siuzanna Grigorian claimed a 6-0, 6-2 victory against State College of Florida freshman Casey O’Toole. She later won the No. 3 doubles title with sophomore Daniela Vanko after a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Garrett and Tyler freshman Autria Compton.
The Avengers finished the tournament with 54 points, outpacing runner-up Tyler who totalled 42 points. State College of Florida came in third place with 35 points.
