DRYDEN, N.Y. – Amanda Anastasia’s header into the back of the net from a corner kick by Keara Homan with less than six minutes in the game proved to be the deciding goal in a 4-3 victory for Brookdale (N.J.) defending champion Mohawk Valley (N.Y.) in the finals of the 2013 NJCAA DIII Women’s Soccer Championship.
Brookdale took an early 2-0 lead in the first half thanks to goals by Caroline Duerr and Brooke Tartis. MVCC scored right before the half to make the game 2-1 on an unassisted goal from Meghan Carlo.
The Jersey Blues then went up 3-1 early in the second half when Alexa Masino scored off an assist from Duerr. The defending champs responded with back-to-back scores from Jordan Case to tie the game at 3-3.
The national championship is the first in women’s soccer for Brookdale, who owned the No. 1 ranking in Division III for the majority of the season.
