Brookdale wins 2010 DIII Softball Title
Rochester, Minn. -- For the third time in five years, the Brookdale Community College softball team has been crowned NJCAA National Champions. The Jersey Blues, who previous earned the Division III title in 2002 and 2005, defeated top-ranked Monroe (NY) 6-3 today in Rochester, MN.
Brookdale, the visiting team for the first time during the tournament, started the day off with a bang - as Sam Dugan stretched her tournament hit-streak intact with a single in the top of the first inning. Tracey Stern then belted a two-run homerun, her 13th of the year to give the Jersey Blues a 2-0 advantage.
Monroe tried to turn the momentum in their favor, with two runners on in the bottom of the second inning, but the attempt was no good, as right fielder Amanda Svenson fired a strike to catcher Christina Masitti to throw the baserunner out at home.
The Jersey Blues continued the tempo and scored three more runs in the third inning thanks in part to yet another clutch hit by Dugan, who led off the inning with a double. Stern then earned a base on balls, and pitcher Kerilyn Svenson reached on an infield hit to load the bases for Sam Deixler. Deixler, known for her heavy bat, contributed right on cue, blasting a two-run double to score both Dugan and Stern.
Monroe then began to battle back, scoring a run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to cut the lead 5-3 heading into the final stanza.
The Jersey Blues added an extra insurance run in the top of the seventh, as Deixler recorded her third RBI of the day by scoring K. Svenson, who reached on an error.
K. Svenson pitched a complete game, and earned her fourth win of the tournament. For her efforts she was named the NJCAA Division III National tournament MVP.
Deixler finished the night three-for-four with three RBIs. Deixler and K. Svenson, along with Dugan and Masitti were named to the All-Tournament team, while head coach Bo Scannapieco was named the National Coach of the Year.
Brookdale finished the 2010 campaign with an overall record of 45-10 while Monroe finishes at 46-15.Tournament Results (Complete Stats)
