Muskegon Downs Kankakee for DII Softball Title

Normal, Ill. -- In just its first appearance in the NJCAA Division II Softball Championship Tournament, Muskegon CC (Mich.) made its presence known by defeating Kankakee CC (Ill.) 2-0 Saturday, May 22 in Normal, Ill., to capture the 2010 NJCAA DII Softball Championship.

The national championship is the first for Muskegon in any women's sport and also marks the first DII softball championship for a NJCAA member school from the state of Michigan since Lansing CC (Mich.) won the title in 2002.

After allowing five earned runs to Kankakee in the first title game of the day, Tournament MVP Ashley White dominated the second championship game for Muskegon. White was near perfect, throwing a complete game two-hit shutout. She struck out two and walked two.

Muskegon scored their lone two runs of the game in the third inning when the team got a clutch RBI single from Ashley Melchert. Chelsea Kurant, who singled earlier in the inning, then stole home to give the Jahawks 2-0 lead they would never surrender.

Muskegon, who entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed, ends the season at 59-9, while Kankakee closes out 2010 at 61-7.
