Iowa Central men win fourth indoor title in six years

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Anchored by four victories in field events, the Iowa Central men clinched their fourth national title since 2011 on Saturday at the NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships at JDL Fast Track.

Tritons freshman Jan-Nhai Perinchie earned an individual crown in the high jump, posting a distance of 2.15 meters. Odaine Lewis found success in his championship appearance for Iowa Central, winning the triple jump with a 15.71-meter performance. Sterling Mungro was the third Tritons freshman to win an event with his 18.01-meter hurl in the shot put. The lone Iowa Central sophomore to win an individual title was Jamal Whittaker, claiming victory in the weight throw with a distance of 19.14 meters.

With the Tritons compiling 132 points at the meet, defending national champion South Plains (Texas) earned a runner-up finish with 105.5 points. The Texans had a pair of freshman win individual titles in Fabian Edoki and Gabe Moore. Edoki’s 7.52-meter jump topped the field in the long jump, while Moore accumulated 5,116 points for victory in the heptathlon.

Despite topping the podium in four track events, Central Arizona finished third with a total of 72 points. Vaqueros freshman Gilbert Kigen was one of only two competitors to win multiple individual crowns, winning the 3,000-meter run in 8:21.61 and the 5,000-meter run in 14:26.23. Fellow freshman Kyron McMaster clocked a 47.95-second effort to win the 400-meter dash, while sophomore Ruebin Walters was the first to cross the finish line in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.77 seconds.
