Gloucester Outlasts Tyler in Extra Innings to Win NJCAA DIII Baseball World Series

Roadrunners win sixth championship on RBI double in 10th inning

TYLER, Texas - Throughout the 2010 NJCAA Division III baseball season Gloucester County College (N.J.) and Tyler Junior College (Texas) performed at such a high level that is was hard to imagine the two wouldn't play for the national title. On Wednesday, May 27 the two teams did exactly that at Mike Carter Field in Tyler in the title game of the NJCAA DIII World Series.

As one would expect when the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked teams meet in the season finale, the two teams gave fans quite a show. After reaching a 4-4 tie after ninth full innings, Gloucester's Logan Morello doubled to center field with two outs to score Mark Malec in the top of the 10th to give the Roadrunners a 5-4 lead. Micheal Ney then came on the hill for Gloucester in the bottom half of the inning, shutting down Tyler with two pop-flies and a strikeout to pick up the save and the program's sixth NJCAA Championship in baseball and first since 2005.

Gloucester held a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning when Tyler put three runs on the board thanks to two hits and two errors by Gloucester to even the score at 4-4. Both teams produced a base runner in their half of the ninth inning but left them stranded.

Frank Vitrano had a solid outing on the mound for the Roadrunners going 6.2 innings, allowing just four hits. He gave up four runs, just two were earned, stuck out four and walked three. However, Matt Smith picked up the win throwing 2.2 scoreless innings with out giving up a hit.

Morello and Jon Garozzo led Gloucester with two hits each and Morello was the lone player in the game to knock in two runs.

Gloucester closes the season at 43-2 while Tyler ends its 2010 campaign at 47-14.
