Bucs Win ACCC Tournament Opener
OXFORD - The 10th ranked Shelton State baseball team pounded out 14 hits in a 5-1 win over Northwest Shoals in the 2025 ACCC Tournament at Choccolocco Park.
Sophomore CF Pierce Dutton and freshman 2B James Graphos were a combined 7-for-8 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Dutton went 4-for-4 with two runs, one triple and one RBI. He has six straight hits for the Bucs.
Freshman 1B Jackson Henderson had four quality at-bats, including a two-run home run and two sac flies.
Sophomore LHP John Michael recorded the last two outs for his 16th career save, tying the school record by David Slovik.
Shelton State (44-11) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Sophomore LF Trenton Shirley stroked a leadoff double to dead centerfield and moved to third on a single by Dutton.
Henderson delivered a sacrifice fly to center to give the Bucs a 1-0 lead.
He also smacked a two-run home run in the third inning to extend the lead 3-0. It was team-leading seventh home run of the year.
Meanwhile, sophomore RHP Mason Steele (6-0) was dominating the Patriots on the mound. He allowed two hits in six scoreless innings, with seven strikeouts and two walks.
The Bucs added two more runs in the seventh to push the lead to 5-0.
Shirley drew a leadoff walk and scored on a RBI triple into the right field corner by Dutton. Henderson then delivered his second sac fly of the game to chase Dutton home.
Shirley reached base three times and scored twice. He had two doubles, giving him 19 on the season to lead the state.
Freshman RHP Peyton Zupancic blanked the Patriots in the seventh and eighth inning before running into trouble in the ninth.
After a ground out to lead off the ninth, Zupancic allowed a single and two straight walks to load the bases.
Pickens came on and allowed a sacrifice fly to Bryant Anthony to break up the shutout.
After a walk, Pickens got Sam Robertson on a ground out to end the game and notch his fourth save of the year.
The Bucs will play again on Saturday, May 10 against Coastal Alabama at 11 a.m. The Coyotes have defeated Chatt Valley and Gadsden State in the tournament.
