Odessa captures ninth men's golf championship

GARDEN CITY, Kan. – Odessa (KS) claimed its ninth NJCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship Friday at the Buffalo Dunes Golf Club in Garden City, Kansas. The Wranglers entered the final round one stroke behind Indian Hills (IA), but overcame the deficiet in windy and cold conditions to finish +14 over the four rounds, which came four strokes ahead of the Warriors. 

The national championship is the first for Odessa since winning back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006. 

Eastern Florida State, Midland (TX) and McLennan (TX) rounded out the top five. 

  • Odessa's drive to the national title was powered by three top five finishers. Adam Bloome was 1-over-par for the tournament, posting a 289 to finish as the national runner-up. Van Thomas came in third overall with a 290 (+2), while Dustin Lewis tied for fourth with a score of 291 (+3).
  • Rick Sanders of Indian Hills (IA) won the individual championship, posting a 3-under-par 285 over four rounds. Sanders is the first golfer from Indian Hills to win a national title since Brad Smith in 2006. 
  • Stefan Cronje of Midland (TX) and Fraser Davren of Eastern Florida State both posted 291 (+3) scorecards to tie for fourth overall with Lewis.
