NJCAA announces championship amendments

Charlotte, NC - Following the 2020 NJCAA Convention, hosted virtually April 20-24, the NJCAA Board of Regents passed a number of amendments to enhance the national championship experience.  The following changes were made for DIII women's basketball, DI and DII softball, and all divisions of golf.

Women's Basketball | Division III

The NJCAA DIII Women's Basketball Committee approved a proposal to expand the national tournament to a 12-team bracket.  Mirroring the change that was made at the DIII men's level for the 2019-20 season, the national tournament will feature eight automatic district qualifiers with an additional four at-large selections.  The new tournament format will add five games and an additional day of competition to the national tournament.  The 2021 DIII women's basketball championship will be held March 10-13 at the Rochester Regional Sports Center in Rochester, MN.

Softball | Division I, II

The NJCAA DI and DII Softball Committees approved a proposal to alter the national tournament format, reducing the number of fields used from four to two.  The adjustment will add an additional day of competition to the 16-team double-elimination national tournament.  The altered bracket will allow greater opportunities to live stream national tournament games, increase recruiting opportunities for student-athletes, provide additional fields for pre-game warm-ups and batting practice, and enhance the overall championship feel of the tournament.  The 2021 NJCAA DI Softball Championship will be held in Yuma, AZ while the 2021 NJCAA DII Softball Championship will be held in Oxford, AL.

Golf | DI, DII, DIII Men's & Women's

The NJCAA Golf Committees approved a proposal to allow a sixth player to substitute for any member of the team during postseason play.  The proposal was adopted across all levels of NJCAA Golf - DI men's, DII men's, DIII men's, women's.  To use the sixth player substitute, the NJCAA Golf Tournament Director and/or NJCAA Representative should be notified of the substitution at least 10 minutes prior to that team members' starting time.  Teams at national championships shall consist of a minimum of four players and a maximum of six players.
