Owen's Lewis garners top coaching honor

Charlotte, NC - For the second consecutive season, Owens' head coach Sonny Lewis has been named the Tachikara NJCAA Division III Volleyball Coach of the Year. 

In his 19th season leading the Express program, Lewis coached his team to its win back-to-back NJCAA Division III Volleyball Championships by defeating Region XII-foe Columbus State 3-0 in Rochester, MN.  Owens finished the season with a 43-4 record, concluding the season on a 16-game winning streak. 

At the national tournament, Lewis coached three players who were named to the All-Tournament team: freshman setter Rebecca Brown, sophomore outside Kayla Bekeir, and freshman outside Tyriana Settles who was named the Tournament MVP.  Bekier and Settles were also named to the NJCAA DIII Volleyball All-America First Team.   

This season, Lewis reached a significant milestone, claiming his 700th career win on October 26th topping Schoolcraft 3-0 in the Region XII tournament semifinals.  Lewis ranks third amongst active NJCAA Volleyball coaches for number of wins and ninth all-time.
