Charlotte, NC - To top off an amazing 2018-19 season, Hostos (NY) head coach DeVernie Winston has been named the 2019 Spalding® NJCAA Division III Women's Basketball Coach of the Year.
Winston completed his fourth season as the Caimans' head coach and led the team to back-to-back NJCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship titles. A strong presence all season, Hostos spent 10 consecutive weeks at No. 2 in the NJCAA DIII Women's Basketball rankings. In the final week of the regular season, the Caimans took down the No. 1 team to claim the top spot in the final poll. Winston coached the Caimans to a 28-5 record.
Since taking over the Caimans' program, Winston has accumulated a 99-25 record. He has led the team to three consecutive NJCAA tournament appearances, including a 5th place finish in 2017 before claiming consecutive titles in 2018 and 2019.
Winston guided a pair of NJCAA All-Americans throughuot the 2018-19 season, including sophomore Skydajah Patterson who was a first team recipient and was named the 2019 Spalding® NJCAA Division III Women's Basketball Player of the Year. Under Winston, Patterson joined Kayla Wilson, a second team All-American selection in 2019 who was named the 2018 Spalding® NJCAA Division III Women's Basketball Player of the Year.
