Commodore Volleyball Loses 3-1 to 3rd Ranked Cougars

September 13, 2019 - - It was an epic battle between two of the nation's top-ranked teams, as the NJCAA's DIII 8th ranked Lorain County Community College played host to the undefeated and 3rd ranked Columbus State Cougars. The match did not disappoint, as both teams came to play…trading the lead throughout the night.

Lorain lost the first set 25-15, but came back strong with a 25-18 win in the second. LCCC fell 25-19 in the third set, but were unable to put away the Cougars after being up 24-21 in the fourth. Columbus State ran off five consecutive points with aggressive play to win the final set 26-24.

Columbus State came into the contest sporting a 9-0 overall record (4-0 OCCAC) seeking retribution for their 2018 Region XII Tournament loss to the Commodores, that sent LCCC to their third national tournament berth in five seasons under the guidance of Hall-of-Fame Head Coach, Ted Whitsel.

Vanecia Billings (Lorain/Clearview) had an outstanding night at the net against some of the best hitters and blockers in the OCCAC. She pounded down a career-high 14 kills going 28 for 34 in attacks, as well as having two solo blocks and two block assists. Kara Sullinger (N. Ridgeville) was 129 of 129 setting with 40 assists.

Brooklyn Hudson (Fitchville/New London) had a season-high 28 digs, while teammates Maddie Markovich (Sheffield Village/Christian Community School) and Myah McDonald (Avon) each contributed 18.

The Commodores host Hocking College in an OCCAC match Saturday, September 14, 2019, at 11am. Lorain is now 9-5 on the year and 1-2 in OCCAC conference play.
