TJC Soccer: Apaches sweep Hill College

Tyler Junior College swept the Hill College Rebels in a soccer doubleheader on Tuesday at Pat Hartley Field.

In the first game, the Apache Ladies won 7-2 with the Apaches taking the second match, 2-1.

WOMEN

Natalie Martinez, a freshman from Perry, Iowa, recorded a hat trick to pace the No. 2 Apache Ladies to the win.

Others scoring goals for TJC were from Mukarama Abdulai, Vicki Adams, Carla Garcia and Selma De Luna.

Along with her goal, Abdulai had three assists. Other assists were from Isabel Kopp and Maria De La Fuente.

Jami Anderson and Damaris Cruz scored goals for Hill.

The Apache Ladies (4-0) next play Northeast Texas in Mount Pleasant on Sept. 20, while Hill (3-2) meets Western Texas on Friday in Snyder at 2 p.m.

MEN

The Apaches, ranked No. 3, claimed a dramatic win when freshman Karsimi Konneh of Seattle hit the goal with just 1:35 on the clock in the second half.

Dylan Bufton, a sophomore from Johannesburg, South Africa, had the assist to break the 1-1 tie.

Hill took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal by Tanner Clements with five minutes left before halftime.

In the 43rd minute, Konneh tied the game at 1-1 off an assist from Thaabit Baartman, a sophomore from Cape Town, South Africa.

"It was a good win," TJC coach Steve Clements said. "We had a lot of guys out with nagging stuff. That was two pretty good teams going at it tonight."

Neil Strauber, a sophomore Tel Aviv, Israel, was in goal for the Apaches.

TJC had seven corner kicks to the Rebels' four with the Apaches recording 16 shots on goal with nine by Hill.

TJC (4-0) has a South Texas swing, meeting Coastal Bend at 3 p.m. Friday in Beeville, followed by a match at Laredo at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Hill (3-2) is scheduled to play Western Texas in Snyder at 4 p.m. Friday.
