Apache soccer teams on roll

Men's Soccer: The Apaches, two-time defending national champions, scored a 3-1 win at Laredo on Friday and 4-1 win over Coastal Bend on Saturday in Beeville.

Women's Soccer: After an opening tie, Corey Rose's women's soccer team has reeled off five-straight wins, including two over the weekend in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Back-to-back games in South Texas makes for a difficult road trip, but the No. 1-ranked TJC soccer team made it look easy.

The Apaches, two-time defending national champions, scored a 3-1 win at Laredo on Friday and 4-1 win over Coastal Bend on Saturday in Beeville.

"The guys did a good job, they have continued to improve and played well," Tyler Junior College coach Steve Clements said.

The victories moved TJC to 5-0 overall and all the games have been Region XIV Conference matches.

In the game with Laredo, the Palominos took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Rodave Murray off an assist by Anesti Pejo.

About eight minutes later, the Apaches tied it up at 1-1 as Cheick Fofana, a freshman from Tucker, Georgia, scored off an assist from Jannik Viedbaek, a freshman from Silkeborg, Denmark.

In the second half, TJC took the lead at the 70-minute mark on Gregory Sutton's unassisted goal. Sutton is a freshman from Maui, Hawaii.

The Apaches put the game away about five minutes later as Dylan Bufton, off an assist from Dion Macfoy-Johnston, made it 3-1. Bufton is a freshman from Johannesburg, South Africa, while Macfoy-Johnson is a freshman from London.

Carl Koester, a sophomore from Syke, Germany, was in goal for the Apaches.

The next day near the Gulf of Mexico, Sutton got the Apaches going with a first-half goal against the Cougars. The assist was by Bufton.

TJC then scored three goals in the second half — Thaabit Baartman (freshman, Cape Town, South Africa), Sutton and Macfoy. Leon Karman (sophomore, Emmendingen, Germany) assisted on Baartman's goal. Both Sutton and Macfoy had unassisted goals.

Neil Strauber (freshman, Tel Aviv, Israel) was in goal for the clean sheet.

TJC plays its first non-conference match on Tuesday, hosting Western Texas at Pat Hartley Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Apaches are also home this weekend — Northeast Texas on Friday and Paris on Saturday at Pat Hartley Field. The games have 7 p.m. starts.

Women's Soccer

After an opening tie, Corey Rose's women's soccer team has reeled off five-straight wins, including two over the weekend in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

TJC (5-0-1) defeated Iowa Western 1-0 on Friday. Hitomi Kono (sophomore, Kanagawa, Japan) scored five minutes into the game on assist from Anakaren Gonzalez (freshman, Birmingham, Alabama).

Whitehouse freshman Sydney Malmstrom was in goal for the clean sheet, making six saves. Rose also commended the defense of Priscilla Rincon (sophomore, Tyler).

The next day, the Apache Ladies defeated the Wyoming team of Laramie County Community College, 3-1.

TJC scored all three goals in the first half — Gonzalez, Jaia Riggan (freshman, Ontario, Canada) and Kono.

Assists were by Shaylee Anaya (sophomore, Katy), Gonzalez and Cherish Clemmons (sophomore, Mesquite).

Malmstrom played 28 minutes and Andrea Neves (sophomore, Hamburg, German) finished the game in goal. Rose noted the defense of Chrysanthi Voli, a freshman from Martino, Greece.

The Apache Ladies play host to Northeast Texas on Friday and Paris on Saturday at Pat Hartley Field. The games have 5 p.m. starts.
