MCC Volleyball prevails over Central CC in straight sets
MCC Volleyball mows down Central CC in straight sets
COLUMBUS The McCook Community College volleyball team posted their fourth consecutive straight-set win, downing Central Community College (Columbus) 25-17, 27-25, 25-13 Saturday."Today we weren't as crisp as yesterday, but we finished off playing well in our last set," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza. "This weekend we were able to get everyone on the court and see where we can put players to become stronger offensively and defensively."
Fernanda Canedo (Cochabamba, Boliva) Fernanda led the Lady Indian attack with 19 kills. The sophomore also had six digs. Kallie Cathcart (sophomore, Holly, Colo.) was credited with 12 kills, two assist blocks and an ace.
"All of the girls played well, but I thought our middles, Emily Barr and Mackenzie Anderson really showed up and Fernanda Canedo came in with 19 kills in three sets," Kobza said.
Emily Barr (sophomore, Hershey) had nine kills, three assist blocks, and two aces. Sophomore Mackenzie Anderson (Hyannis/Ogallala High School) had five assist blocks and one kill. Freshman Jordan Jerome (Rawlins, Wyo.) had four kills, five assist blocks and an ace.
"Jordan also worked hard on the block today," Kobza said.
Freshman Eisa Mondragon (Topeka, Kan.) had 13 digs, three aces and five assists. Evie Hopkinson (redshirt freshman, Spanish Fork, Utah) was credited with six digs.
Janie Sommer (freshman, Maxwell) led MCC with 26, assists to go along with 15 digs, two kills, and she assisted on two blocks. Sophomore Heiata Tauota (Nantes, France), had six assists.
Central falls to 7-12 and 1-3 in NCCAC play. The Raiders will come to McCook March 20 for a 6 p.m. game.
MCC improves to 12-6 and 3-1 in the Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference.
The Lady Indians will hit the road Tuesday for a 7 p.m. (MT) game at Sterling, Colo. It will be the first of three games against Top 15 opponents this week with Northeastern Junior College (13-7) ranked No. 15. On Friday MCC goes to Scottsbluff for a triangular with No. 9 Western Nebraska (16-4) at 4 p.m. (MT) and against No. 5 Iowa Western Community College (11-3) at 6 p.m. (MT).
MCC has three home matches left: March 16 against North Platte (7 p.m.); March 18 with Lamar (4 p.m.) and the March 20 match with Central Community College to close out the NCCAC schedule.
