Aztecs Volleyball Fall in Five Set Thriller at Scottsdale CC

The Pima Community College volleyball team (14-12, 4-7 in ACCAC) played a tough match on the road against No. 9 ranked Scottsdale Community College.

The Aztecs took the lead in the match but lost in five sets 26-24, 17-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-6. The Aztecs lost to Scottsdale in five sets last month at the West Campus.

The Aztecs fell behind 7-1 in the fifth set tie-breaker but came back to cut the deficit to 7-4. Scottsdale secured the next five set points to widen their lead and eventually take the set and match.

The Aztecs let the first set slip away after leading most of the game. Their biggest lead was 16-10 but Scottsdale rallied to win it. Up 17-15 in the second set, Pima took command when they rallied off four straight points to help tie the match.

Pima took a 2-1 lead in the match after they won the third set. Up 20-19, they scored the last five of six points. Scottsdale took control of the fourth set to tie the match and force it into a fifth set tiebreaker.

The Aztecs had 15 aces in the match. Sophomore Miranda Bingham (Safford HS) had 35 assists to go along with a team-leading five aces. Sophomore Angel Chavez (Mingus Union HS) had 27 digs and four aces while fellow sophomore Arisa Chavez had five kills, four aces and nine digs. Freshman Kristin Baldwin (Thatcher HS) finished with 14 kills and one ace. Sophomore Jamie Holliday (Sahuaro HS) had 10 kills, 11 digs and one ace.

The Aztecs will play at Arizona Western College on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
