Playing under a constant rain that turned into heavy downpours at times, the Tompkins Cortland and SUNY Broome women's soccer teams faced off in Dryden on Wednesday. Aside from a one-minute stretch in the second half, the two teams were evenly matched, but that one minute made all the difference as he visiting Hornets scored twice to earn a 2-0 win over the Panthers. The loss drops Tompkins Cortland to 4-7-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the Mid-State Athletic conference. Broome is 10-3 overall and 4-1 in the MSAC.

Neither team mounted much of a serious threat through the first 55 minutes of play. The first big chance came in the 56th minute, when Tompkins Cortland's Shannon DeRosa (Poughquag/Arlington H.S.) put a shot on the goal that the Broome keeper stopped, but let slip through her wet hands and trickle towards the goal line. The Hornet was able to regain control of the ball just in time, snatching it form the end line as it was moving towards the net. A few minutes later the game changed, with Broome scoring the game's first goal with 31:12 left in the second half, and then adding a second goal moments later with 30:31 left on the clock. The Panthers threatened as the clock ran down, notably with a pair of well-struck balls by Elise Clavel (Ithaca/Lehman Alternative Community School) flying just over the crossbar. Goalkeeper Kerrin O'Shaughnessy (Worcester/Worcester H.S.) made four saves during the game, but in the end the offense couldn't put any in and the two Broome goals stood as the only scores.

The Panthers have a week to dry out before playing again. Next up is a road game at Jefferson Community College on Wednesday, October 23.
