MCC volleyball sweeps NCCAC road foe for second straight night

MCC scores conference road sweep on consecutive nights

COLUMBUS The McCook Community College volleyball team swept a conference opponent on the road for the second straight night Wednesday, downing Central Community College 25-22, 25-21, 25-20. MCC now leads the Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference with a 5-0 mark with one game left to play North Platte at home on Tuesday. The Lady Indians swept Southeast Community College in Beatrice Tuesday.

"The ladies came out and played consistent volleyball... all up until we reached 20 points," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza. "Tomorrow at practice we need to figure out how to motivate ourselves to turn up the heat in the last five points of the match."

Freshman Fernanda Canedo, (Cochabamba, Boliva) had 11 kills, 11 digs, one assist block, one solo block, and one ace. Sophomore Bailey Honn, (McCook) had seven kills and two assist blocks. Freshman Emily Barr, (Hershey) had seven kills and three assist blocks.

Sophomore co-captain Mallory Brown, (Colorado Springs) had six kills, 10 digs and two ace serves. Freshman Mackenzie Anderson, (Ogallala) had five kills and three assist blocks and freshman Kallie Cathcart, (Holly, Colo.) had three kills, five assist blocks, and one solo block

"Kallie Cathcart played an outstanding blocking game," Kobza said.

Sophomore co-captain Kiera Barr, (Granby, Colo.) led MCC with 17 digs.

"Kiera had a great game as well, along with her defensive play she also played a big role on making sure the girls on the court finished the match," Kobza said.

Freshmen setters Madison Mendoza, (Ogallala) had 16 assists and Heiata Tauota, (Nantes, France) had 14 assists and one ace.

Central Community College is now 13-15 overall and 2-3 in NCCAC.

MCC is 18-7 and wraps up the NCCAC schedule Tuesday in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center against North Platte (11-17, 3-1) in the annual Pink-Out game.

This Friday the Lady Indians bring the focus back to Region IX South Sub-Regional play where they are 3-1 and host 17th ranked Western Nebraska (19-9, 3-0) in a 7 p.m. matchup that will be for a share of the south sub Region IX lead.
