Senior Day leads to 13th consecutive MVC win

HERKIMER, NY – On Senior Day in the varsity gym Saturday (2/21), the #2 Herkimer Generals men's basketball team defeated North Country Community College 84-69, winning their 13th consecutive Mountain Valley Conference game in the process.

Herkimer (26-3, 17-1) got a kick start from sophomore Jallah Tarver (Schenectady, NY) who took a charge with 5:48 left in the first half. It led to a 27-6 run with shots made by Ken Woodard (Bronx, NY), Jamell Johnson (Rochester, NY), Dantre Langhorne (Greenport, NY), Julio Galay (Bronx, NY), Carson Murphy (Mohawk, NY) and Daniel Owens (Albany, NY). Woodard finished with 18, Johnosn finished with 13, Langhorne finished with 12, Galay finished with six, Murphy finished with 12 and Owens finished with three.

The before mentioned Tarver had the highlight of the first half, hitting a 16 foot jumper after collecting his own shot from deep, giving Herkimer a 47-30 lead at half. Tarver finished the game with seven.

The lead reached 20 points with 12 minutes left in the second half after Murphy sank one of two from the charity stripe. It almost got to 30 points (71-42) after Murphy and Johnson both sank three-point field goals, then a steal by Murphy led to a tomahawk dunk with the right hand.

The Generals had reserves in within the next couple minutes, keeping the lead to 20 after Eli Huggins (Bronx, NY) grabbed an offensive board which lead to a layup. Kareem Brown (Troy, NY) scored the final field goal, giving Herkimer a 15 point win (84-69).

Seedings for regionals will be decided on Sunday, February 22nd. Herkimer should receive the No. 1 seed.
