WXC Earns 4th Title, Damaris Chewon Wins for Third Time

The Thunderbird women's cross country team finished in first place for the fourth time this year with a team score of 19 points on Friday, Oct. 13 at the NMJC Invitational III 5k. The women were 25 points ahead of the second-place finisher El Paso.

Sophomore Damaris Chewon won her third race of the season on Friday. Chewon finished in first place for the second consecutive meet, this time with a season-best 5k run of 18:13.20.

Freshman Jayne Elvin was runner-up for the second straight meet after completing the race in 18:58.96. Vanessa Gallegos has exuded consistency for the T-Birds with her third-place finishes in the last three races. The sophomore finished her race in 19:19.28.

Carolyne Kimaiyo returned to action after taking the week off to place fifth with a time of 19:50.91. The sophomore's finish was 5.56 seconds faster than at the NMJC Invitational in September. Jody Ann Mitchell made her way into the scoring lineup for the first time this season with her 10th-place finish. The freshman came across the finish line in 20:24.03, slashing her previous-best time by 35.17 seconds. 

Freshman Tyfane Martins was the sixth runner for the T-Birds to finish. The freshman came in 47.24 seconds faster this week to place 12th with a time of 20:40.36.

Sophomore Morgan Waltmire finished in 14th place with a time of 21:04.31, while freshman Francesca Alvarado recorded a 16th place-finish (21:29.45). Daphne Kausz came in 24th place after improving by 29.07 seconds with her 23:17.83 finish.

Lisanne Schapendonk rested and did not race this meet.

The T-Birds look to repeat as Region V champions in women's cross country Saturday, Oct. 28. 

"The women are looking good going into regionals," women's cross country head coach Jeff Becker said. "We have a few that are still needing to get healthy, but we have great depth this year. Hopefully we can repeat the success we had at regionals last season."

The Thunderbird women drop one spot to No. 3 in the USTFCCCA NJCAA DI Women's Cross Country National Coaches' Poll (Week 3).

The T-Birds will have one week off before they prepare for the Region V Championships at Harry McAdams Park in Hobbs, NM. The meet will start for the women at 10:30 a.m. MDT on Saturday, Oct. 28.
