Jayhawks Battle but Falls to VIlla Maria

BUFFALO - Going up against the No. 10 team in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), the Jamestown Community College men's basketball team fell to Villa Maria College Thursday evening, 65-51.

 

The Jayhawks (0-12) were led offensively by guard Clinique Jackson (Rochester, NY/East HS) with 11 points as Jafar Yahuza (Staten Island, NY/Port Richmond), Gonzalo Luque (Madrid, Spain/Instituto Ortega y Gasset) and Keon Armstrong (Chatham, NY/Chatham HS) each chipped in with seven points.

 

On the glass, forward Traden Gray (Frewsburg, NY/Frewsburg HS) had a team-high eight rebounds (2 offense, 6 defense) with Jackson added five rebounds (1 offense, 4 defense).

 

The Vikings got out to an early  9-4 lead but JCC kept playing their game and didn't force the issue early. Guard Elgin Oliver (Monroeville, PA/Gateway Senior HS) helped the Jayhawks earn their first lead of the game at the 7:20 mark of the first half, converting his and-one opportunity to make it 14-13.

 

Villa Maria made a pair of baskets before the break as they took a 30-25 lead into halftime.

 

The Vikings took their strong end of the first half and transferred it over to the beginning of the second half, gaining a 42-29 lead for their biggest lead of the game at the time. JCC responded, going on an 8-0 run to make it 42-37 with Yahuza leading the way with four points.

 

Villa Maria used a 19-7 run during the second half to help secure the victory.

 

The Jayhawks went 21-for-54 (38.9 percent) from the floor with the Vikings going 22-for-57 (38.6 percent) from the field. Villa Maria held the slight edge on the boards, grabbing 40 rebounds to the Jayhawks' 37 rebounds

 

The Jayhawks will be back at it this Saturday, December 10th, as they travel to take on Jefferson Community College at 4:00 p.m. Spectators are limited to Jefferson Community College students for the game.
