Saints Season Ends in Region III Semis

Binghamton, NY- The Saints played hard end to end for 90 minutes, but in the end fell to #2 ranked Broome 1-0.

Broome scored just 9:32 into the game for what turned out to be the games only goal.

"We had a momentary defensive breakdown and against a team like Broome, they'll make you pay for it." Saints Coach Kent Egglefield said.

The game went back and forth over two halves with each team having spurts of possession. Broome did everything they could to try to contain the Saints top offensive players, marking both Mikenna Valentine and Chloe Flannaghan 1v1.

"We had had so many scoring chances and just couldn't capitalize." added Egglefield. "Mikenna created so many opportunities we didn't capitalize on. They blanketed her defensively but she was still everywhere. One of her best games here."

"They marked Chloe man to man and tried to take her away from our attack as well. The fact that she was able to still create chances tells how bad she wanted it. I couldn't be more proud of them both."

The Saints also received strong games from Alyssa Summo and Abby Hart in the midfield. "Alyssa and Abby have worked so hard all season and they don't get all the credit they deserve. They are both team first players and are willing to do whatever it takes to win."

"Defensively, Carlijn van der Smeede, Sydney VanNest, and Cassidy Rushby were rock solid. And Alison (Van Schaik) was brilliant in net."

Van Schaik finished with 7 saves in her final game. This season Alison set the all-time career shut out record for NCCC.

The loss dropped NCCC to 10-5 for the year.

"I need to thank these girls for getting me through this season." said Egglefield. "My sophomores and I have been through so much together... I could never praise them enough."

"Chloe, Mikenna, Alyssa, Carlijn, Abby, Ali, AJ, Sydney, Jackie, and Averi.... Thank you... You will all be missed more than you know."

GOAT of the Game

Our GOAT of the Game is sophomore defender Carlijn van der Smeede from Nootdorp, Netherlands. Carlijn switched from midfield to defense after the first goal and calmed the defense down. Her leadership and skill brought the group together and allowed the Saints to close gaps and shooting lanes quickly. She allowed the offense to transition more efficiently with her distribution abilities. She switched positions and did it without flaw in the middle of a playoff game. Her willingness to do whats best for the team speaks of her leadership and desire to win. Thank you Carlijn for an amazing two years! Congrats on your season and career!
