Flyers Top Lancers - Host Virginia Peninsula on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Trailing 19-17 midway through the first half on Wednesday, a three by freshman Jamori McDougald ignited a 14-0 run and the Sandhills Community College basketball team rolled from there to a 109-80 victory over Lenoir CC in Kinston.
The No. 4 in Division III ranked Flyers improved to 9-2 overall. Including their second win of the season over the now 1-10 Lancers, they have compiled a record of 5-0 against Division II teams.
McDougald and Kendall Wooldridge led four Flyers in double figures with 13 points each. Quantavis McKinney poured in 33 points for the Lancers.
Next for Coach Mike Apple's squad is a home game on Saturday at 3 p.m. against Virginia Peninsula CC. The Gators located in Newport News, VA are a season away from competing in NJCAA Division III Region 10. Their 2-2 record includes a win over a Mountain Gateway CC squad that is a conference opponent of the Flyers.
The rally-starting basket by McDougald was capped by the first trey of the season from 6-foot-9 Zac Sledge, followed by a basket in transition by Antonio Leslie, from Alon Hanani, making it 31-19 with just over six minutes remaining in the half.
The final basket before the intermission by Leslie, who finished the game with 11 points, made it 51-26. The second half was played under fairly equal terms with the home team never getting any closer than 21 points.
The Flyers were awarded a season-low five free throws. They out-rebounded the Lancers 55 to 35 led by Sledge with nine boards. The assist leader was McDougald with 7.
A solid all-around effort by LeNijel Robinson produced 10 points, eight rebounds, six assists and a steal. Jamal Williams was 4-for-4 from the field and scored eight points.
