Weekend Review: The Saints compete at the JUCO showcase and end the weekend with a loss to Southwestern Oklahoma

LIBERAL, Kan. - Seward County Community College competed on Friday and Saturday at the JUCO Showcase in Plano, Texas followed by a match on Sunday at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. The Saints had a great showing in the JUCO Showcase and displayed their overall talent levels with other Junior college programs. In the Sunday Match, the Saints were unable to defeat the Savage Storm and lost a very close match 4-3.

The JUCO Showcase was an individual-based tournament and featured Barton Community College, Cowley Community College, Collin College, Tyler Junior College, New Mexico Military Institute, and Jacksonville College. This tournament was broken up with eight singles and four doubles brackets that were separated to skill level. Each program's number one singles were featured into a bracket and a separate bracket featured the program's number two singles, etc...

Luciano Fisicaro competed in the top singles bracket and fell in the championship to claim second at the showcase. Fisicaro fell in the championship match to a Tyler Junior College opponent. Juan Gonzales and Paulo Castillo-Martinez both lost in their semifinal singles match but both would win their third-place match to end the showcase on a high note. 

Kyllian Savary and Raul Centeno lost their first singles match on Friday but won the rest of the matches to win their brackets singles consolation. 

In doubles, Gonzales and Castillo-Martinez made it to the championship match in their doubles bracket but fell to claim second place. Nil Moinet and Martins Abamu won all of their doubles matches to claim the championship of their bracket. 

Tyler Junior College won most of the brackets this weekend and will be the team to beat in Nationals. 

Sunday's Match

Seward County traveled to Durant, Oklahoma for a match against Southeastern Oklahoma State University. The Saints fell short 4-3 and a couple of tough losses in singles that gave the Savage storm the win.

In doubles, Fisicaro and Centeno were able to win handly 6-1. Enzo Frequelin and Kyllian Savary fell in the second doubles 6-4 but the Saints got the win in the third doubles with a 6-1 victory by Gonzales and Castillo-Martinez. 

Entering the singles matches the Saints led 2-1 but in the first singles, Luciano Fisicaro fell in straight sets 4-6, 4-6. At the second doubles Savary won in straight sets 6-0, and 6-4. Juan Gonzales in the fourth singles slot got the victory 7-5, and 6-2.  Paulo Castillo-Martinez fell in straight-sets 6-3, and 6-4 in the fifth singles spot.

Raul Centeno's match in the third singles slot fell in the third set tiebreaker with set scores 6-1, 3-6, and 8-10. The sixth singles spot Enzo Frequelin fell in the third set as well with the set scores 6-3, 4-6, and 6-10.

Seward county falls to 11-3 overall and will be back in action Saturday, April, 17th against Barton Community College.
