Chargers Sweep Individual Titles, Win Men’s Championship at Arrowhead Conference Meet
GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College cross country teams swept the individual titles, won the men's championship and had six total runners earn all-conference honors as they hosted the Arrowhead Conference Championships on Saturday morning.
The Chargers' Sharon Yego won the women's 5-kilometer title, while Collines Chelak won the men's 8K title. Both Sandburg teams had three finishers in the top five of their races, earning spots on the All-Arrowhead Conference Team.
Yego and teammate Damaris Kimaiyo were neck and neck down the stretch, with Yego winning by less than a half-second, in 20 minutes, 32.91 seconds. Kimaiyo had a runner-up time of 20:33.40. Ascar Jepchirchir finished fourth in the women's race in 22:39.20 for Sandburg.
Chelak was first across in the men's race in 26:57.81, beating teammate and runner-up Allan Kipruto's time of 27:11.92. Meshack Kimutai was the Chargers' third all-conference runner, placing fourth in 28:13.84.
The Chargers totaled 23 points to beat Sauk Valley by nine for the team title.
