6th ranked Barton women’s tennis wins battle over 7th ranked Seward County in conference opener.
The 6th ranked Barton Community College women's tennis team traveled to Liberal on Tuesday in returning home with a 5-4 victory over 7th ranked Seward County Community College to open conference play.
The Cougars faced a 2-1 deficit after doubles action but rallied behind four straight set victories in the singles matches in clinching the dual.
Barton remains unblemished on the season at 10-0 headed into Monday's 1:00 p.m. hosting of 21st ranked Pratt Community College at Veterans' Memorial Park.
Luciana Braga picked up a big straight set win in the No. 2 slot as the 20th ranked freshman knocked off the Saints' top ranked Carol Mora Camacho 6-1, 6-3.
In the No. 3 spot, 30th ranked Tshegofatso Tsiang also rolled to a straight set win on 6-4, 6-2 scores over the Saints' Jaena Morais.
Due to a game day sickness, the move up a spot to No. 5 didn't phase Ana Vasilis in registering a 6-2, 6-2 win over Camila Corrales with Ana Alice Tosetto sliding into the No. 6 spot in taking the first set 6-1 and was up 2-0 before an injury retirement by the Saints' Milica Radunovic.
Carmen Lyons and Vasilis gave Barton its lone victory in doubles play with an 8-2 win over Corrales and Radunovic.
The Cougars' top tandem of 10th ranked Clara Penido and Tsiang fell in a tight 8-6 battle with Camille Belberka and Ana Isabella Serrano while the No. 2 20th ranked duo of Braga and Azul Barrios battled through Barrios' sickness to eventually fall 9-8, 7-4 in the tiebreaker to Camacho and Morais.
In addition to the No. 2 singles match, the No. 1 singles matchup was also a dual of nationally ranked players as the Saints' 11th ranked Belberka dispatch 12th ranked Penido 6-1, 6-1.
Lyons took the other Barton loss in singles play, dropping the first set 7-4 in the No. 4 tiebreaker, forcing a third set behind a 6-3 win but coming up short in the deciding set 6-2.
