Golden Eagles Defeat Central Wyoming in First Round of Region IX Tournament

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – The Laramie County Community College (19-11) closed out their last home game of the season at the RAC with a 69-60 win against Central Wyoming College (11-20).

The Golden Eagles advance to the quarterfinals of the Region IX Tournament. LCCC moves to 19-11 on the year and will be searching for win number 20 on Thursday.

LCCC got off to a slow start in the first quarter as they trailed for majority of the quarter. The Golden Eagles took a small 9-8 lead with 5:13 left in the first quarter but the Rustlers led 17-15 after one. A strong second quarter saw LCCC take a 37-27 lead into halftime. The second half was controlled by LCCC in the third quarter but CWC made a push in early minutes of the fourth quarter cutting the lead down to two. The Golden Eagles closed the game out on a 7-0 run.

The Golden Eagles were very efficient and impressive on offense. The Rustlers won the rebounding battle 37-32 but the Golden Eagles forced the Rustlers into 21 turnovers. Offensively, the Golden Eagles team shot 41.7 percent (25-60) from field goal range and 42.1 percent (8-19) from beyond the arch.

Three Golden Eagles scored in double figures as Karli O'Brien (Rapid City, South Dakota) led all players in points with 25. O'Brien also had seven rebounds and dished out three assists. Gabi O'Connor (Colorado Springs, Colorado) scored 17 points and had three assists. Haylie Anderson (Clearfield, Utah) contributed 11 points, three steals and three assists in the win. Ja'Kia Wells (Mesquite, Texas) pulled down 12 rebounds and had two blocks.

The Golden Eagles have won three straight. With the win, the Golden Eagles have locked up a place in the quarterfinals of the Region IX Tournament and will play Northeastern Junior College in Scottsbluff, Nebraska on Thursday. A game time has not been announced yet.
