BlueWave women go on three game road trip

BlueWave women go on three game road trip

Florida State College at Jacksonville BlueWave women's basketball team participated in the annual JUCO shootout held this year at Florida Southwestern State College in Fort Meyers, FL, while adding a road game to close out the weekend.

Thursday night FSCJ opened up the event against Palm Beach State College, who they previously played earlier this month in the Indian River Tip-Off.  In their first meeting Palm Beach secured the win by 1 point in over-time handing the BlueWave their first loss of the season. Despite FSCJ having a short roster, they came out ready to play securing the first quarter win with a score of 16-11. Second quarter found a different fate as Palm Beach began to connect their shots and outscored the BlueWave by 18 points, ending the first half with a score of 21-34. The second half found FSCJ and Palm Beach neck in neck in competition with only a basket difference between them in the quarter. FSCJ worked to execute in the final quarter but just could not connect, bringing the final score to a 45-71 loss. Monique Bryant finished with 15 points and 8 rebounds, while Jazmine Williams contributed 10 points.

Friday the BlueWave suited up for their second matchup in the shootout versus Chipola College. FSCJ came out slow to start the first half, forcing Coach Wooten to call a quick timeout to stop Chipola's 15-4 run. The first half FSCJ only connected seven of twenty three shot attempts from the field, while Chipola hit twenty six shots of their fifty one, with seven of those shots being 3 pointers. The score at halftime found the BlueWave down with a score of 19-49. With a long game ahead, Florida State College at Jacksonville tried to decrease Chipola's lead by taking away their three point shot and working to remove the ball from Chipola's Patterson's who seemed to be unstoppable at the 3point line. The second half, FCSJ's adjustments worked with Chipola only being one for six from the three point line, but it wasn't enough to stop their diverse offensive game. Sophomore Monique Bryant contributed 19 of the BlueWaves 37 points in the 37-95 loss

Florida State College at Jacksonville added an additional away game to their schedule while on the road. FSCJ traveled to face the Seahawks of Broward Community College in Davie, Florida on Saturday afternoon. The BlueWave came out with high energy and sped into action in the first quarter, but the tough three game schedule caught up to them in headed into the second quarter. Down by 25 points to end the half, the BlueWave's tenacity contributed to forcing Broward to their lowest scoring quarter. The final quarter, FSCJ could not stop Broward's inside game. Broward's post present was too much to contain with FSCJ's limited roster and the Seahawks secured the victory with a final score of 89-48. Freshman Kayla Mansell ended the game with 18 points and 5 assists alongside teammate Gift Sampson who added 14 points.
