Cardinals Fall Short in Season Opener 71-67 to Harcum College
On Tuesday, November 1st, the Cardinal's women's basketball team had their regular season opener against the Bears from Harcum College. A game that came right down to the wire resulted in a heartbreaking 71-67 home loss to the Cardinals.
For the first two periods of the game before halftime, Catonsville and Harcum could not be separated. There were six lead changes throughout the first half of the game. Both teams stayed within ten points of each other, with Catonsville's largest lead coming at 5:47 remaining in the second quarter thanks to freshman guard Ahna Thomas' (Prince George's County, MD) two made free throws.
The score was 29-21 before Harcum made a comeback late in the quarter just before halftime. A 9-0 run would see the Bears have their first lead since the 9-minute mark of the first quarter. Freshman guard Kayla Cabbagestalk (Baltimore, MD) took things into her own hands for the Cardinals and dropped two jump shots in the final 1:30 to help Catonsville regain their lead before halftime.
Harcum would score a quick four points at the start of the third quarter, but Catonsville would take over the lead once again soon after. Much like the first half overall, there was nothing to split these two sides. The Bears outscored the Cardinals 18-17 in the third period, but Catonsville would retain the lead with just one quester to go.
An exciting back-to-back final quarter was in motion until sophomore guard Amaree Knight (Clinton, MD) drained a three-point shot for Catonsville with 2:32 left on the clock. The Cardinals led once again 64-62. The final two minutes saw the Bears make all their chances count, while the Cardinals did not have enough in them to keep up. Harcum would outscore Catonsville 9-3 to win the game 71-67.
The Cardinal women will look to get their first win of the season in another home game this Thursday, November 3rd as they face the Lackawanna College Falcons at 5:00pm!
