Seahawks softball drops two to start 2020 campaign

SEGUIN – Lamar State College Port Arthur got some fantastic individual effort in the opening day of the 2020 softball season but it wasn't enough to prevent a two-game sweep to start the season.

The Seahawks suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 decision to Our Lady of the Lake University in the first game of the Seguin College Tournament, falling 15-7 to the University of Houston-Victoria in the second game of the day.

The Hawks return to play in the second day of the Seguin College Tournament with games at 8 a.m. against Ranger College, 12:30 p.m. against UH-Victoria and 2:45 against host team Texas Lutheran University.

The Seahawks collected eight hits against the Our Lady of the Lakes University Saints with sophomore Brooke Smith and freshmen Savannah Trahan and Erica Riley each collecting extra-base hits. It wasn't enough, though, as the Hawks left 10 on base in the loss.

LSCPA opened with a run in the bottom of the first inning after three straight singles resulted in a Celeste Salazar fielder's choice for a 1-0 lead. In the second inning, Grace Coffelt singled to center, followed by an Elicia Gonzales walk. Smith doubled to score Coffelt for the 2-0 advantage. Gonzales scored later in the inning when Riley picked up an RBI on a groundout to third.

The Saints finally got on the board in the fourth with back-to-back home runs to close the gap to 3-2.

In the top of the sixth, OLLU opened the inning with back-to-back singles. A fielding error later in the inning allowed two runs to cross for the final 4-3 difference.

Riley tripled in the bottom of the sixth, seemingly putting the Seahawks back in contention but a strikeout ended the threat. Riley finished 3 for 4 to lead at the plate. Sophomore Britni Hunt went the distance in the circle, allowing two earned runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and one walk.
