Kimaiyo, Chelak Lead Chargers at Fighting Bee Invitational

BETTENDORF, Iowa — Damaris Kimaiyo and Collines Chelak paced the Carl Sandburg College cross country teams at the Fighting Bee Invitational on Saturday at Crow Creek Park.

Kimaiyo posted a top-10 time in the 5-kilometer women's race, placing 10th in 21:30. Right behind her in 11th was teammate Sharon Yego at 21:35. Also running for the Sandburg women's team were Ascar Jepchirchir with a 22nd-place time of 23:16 and Jersee Hamm in 32nd at 26:19.

The Chargers fielded four runners and did not post a team score. St. Ambrose's Kaitlyn Knoche won the women's race in 19:45. The host Bees won with 34 points, with runner-up William Penn at 51.

Chelak's 12th-place showing led Sandburg in the 8K men's race. The freshman crossed the line in 27:35. Allan Kipruto next for the Chargers in 14th place in 27:45.

Other finishers for Sandburg were Meshack Kimutai (28th, 29:32), Titus Kimutai (36th, 30:33) and Larry Kamara (47th, 37:36).

The Chargers finished fifth with 114 points. William Penn had the top four finishers and won with 24 points, while St. Ambrose was second with 35. William Penn's Brandon Williams was the men's winner in 26:22.
