Co-Lin falls to the Dolphins in challenging road matchup
NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Wolves of Copiah-Lincoln suffered the first defeat of the season this week as the team dropped a pair to the Delgado Dolphins in New Orleans. Co-Lin fell behind early in game one and lost, 10-1, but the team bounced back and showed a lot of grit in the nightcap. Unfortunately, a four-run fifth inning put the Dolphins back on top and won 6-4. After several weather cancelations, Co-Lin is set to play again this Sunday, February 23 at 11 a.m. against Meridian Community College followed by a matchup with Mississippi Delta at 2 p.m. Both games will be held on Meridian's campus.
The Dolphins jumped out in front in game one as the team plated four runs in the second, two in the third, and one in the fourth, fifth, and sixth inning.
The Wolves responded in the top of the sixth with a double from Peyton Parker to center field. The hard-hit ball scored Joshua Day who led off the inning and reached base via a Dolphin error.
Jay Smith got the start and took the loss for the Wolves as he surrendered four runs on three hits over two innings, striking out three and walking one. Tucker Jones, Sevante Quinn, and Rhett Blackburn all saw action on the hill. Blackburn led the relievers with a pair of strikeouts. Dwain Guice took the win for Delgado. He lasted three innings, allowing two hits and zero runs while striking out three.
Day, Cade Lowery, Parker, Justin Johnson, and Trey Frierson all had one hit to lead Co-Lin at the dish in game one. The Dolphins out hit the Wolves 12 to five.
Game two was more competitive as the Wolves knotted the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning after Day cranked a two-run homer to right field. The long ball plated Parker who led off the inning with a line-drive double to center field. The Dolphins responded with a big inning the bottom of the fifth as runners scored on a single, a hit by pitch, a walk, and a fielder's choice. The big frame put Delgado on top, 6-2.
The Wolves clapped back in the top of the sixth with a brief two-out rally. Day drew a walk followed by a single from Marquez Hudson that moved Day to third. The speedy sophomore then capitalized on a passed ball to cross the plate. Brooks Italiano followed with a line drive to the pitcher that allowed Hudson to score. The inning came to a close with a groundout, which wrapped the scoring, with the Dolphins on top 6-4.
Brandon Brown was on the mound for the Wolves. He went four innings, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out four, while Cameron Hill, Parker, Bryce Henry, and Weston Acy each contributed in relief. Hill took the loss for Co-Lin.
Day, Keagan Ward, Parker, Italiano, Hudson, and Frierson all had one hit to lead the Wolves at the plate. The Wolves outpaced the Dolphins at the plate with six hits to the Dolphins three.
