Opening weekend split

Opening weekend split

In their opening weekend of play, the Cyclones split two at the Parkland College Tournament (Nov. 2-3), including a win over the nationally ranked host school.

Moraine Valley first faced No. 18 in the nation, Parkland. The ball changed hands several times throughout the first half seeing an 18-all tie at the end of the first quarter and the Cyclones down 39-36 at the half. However, a fiery Cyclone offensive surge in the third quarter put them ahead, where they remained. Leading by as much as nine in the fourth quarter, the Cyclones held on to this opening day victory. Julia Ruzevich led with 28 points and also had 10 rebounds. All but eight of her points came in the second half. Hennessey Handy added 17 points and 10 rebounds as well. Ashley Hunter and Kate Ruzevich chipped in 12 points each.

Although they defeated a tough opponent to start, the Cyclones lost that energy and mental preparedness in their second game to Lincoln Land Community College, losing 80-68. A slow start saw Moraine Valley go down 22-7 early. They fought to get back within three points on a number of occasions during the next three quarters, but never gained the lead. Julia Ruzevich led again with 25 points, Handy added 19 points and five assists and Kate Ruzevich had a double-double (16 points, 11 rebounds).
