St. Johns River State College (SJRSC) pushed two runs across the plate in the top of the seventh inning and held the DMACC softball team scoreless in the bottom of the inning to hand the Bears a 2-0 loss in the first round of the 2024 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Softball World Series May 20 at Tyger River Park in Spartanburg, S.C.
DMACC, which fell to 46-10, was shutout for just the third time this season.
The loss sent the Bears to the consolation bracket of the tournament. DMACC will play again at 9 a.m. on May 22 and will face one of three teams pending the outcome of games being played today. Two of the three teams are Jones College (JC) and Rock Valley Community College (RVCC). DMACC played and defeated both during the regular season.
DMACC was limited to just five hits in the loss to SJRSC. Sophomore Kelsey Palmer of Cedar Rapids led the Bears with two hits, including a double, and sophomore Hannah Ironside of Swisher and freshmen Hilary Wilson of Solon and Breanna Caffrey of Bettendorf had one hit apiece.
Sophomore Courtney Donahue of Marshfield, Wis., pitched all seven innings and fell to 25-4 with the loss. She allowed two runs on five hits and struck out four batters.
