No. 16 Lady Texans open conference play on Wednesday in Midland

LEVELLAND — The No. 16 ranked South Plains College women's basketball team will travel to Midland on Wednesday for their conference opener against No. 21 Midland College at the Al G. Langford Chaparral Center, with tipoff set for 5:45 p.m.

The Lady Texans come into the contest with a 10-1 record and winners of 10 straight. South Plains swept the Lady Chaps a year ago picking up a 69-61 win in Midland on Nov. 30 and downed the Lady Chaps 91-57 on Feb. 2 at the Texan Dome.

Midland currently sits at 5-5 on the year and has dropped three of their last four games. That said, the Lady Chaps lost all three games by a combined nine points against No. 2 Trinity Valley (64-61), No. 5 Salt Lake (54-51), and No. 10 Odessa College (42-39).

Who to watch:  

South Plains is led by 3-point specialist Mikayla Kuehne who averages 15 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Kuehne ranks third nationally with 40 total 3-pointers and ranks in the 25 in the country in field goals (56) and total points (165).  Freshman Gabbie Green is shooting 48 percent from the floor and averages 10 points per game on the year. Freshman La'Praisjah Johnson is averaging 9.5 points per game and shooting nearly 46 from the field after 11 games. Lubbock native and Monterey grad Chelsea Hunter leads the Lady Texans with 4.3 assists and 5.4 boards per game to go along with her 6.6 points per game average.

Midland is led by sophomore guard Alexandrea Washington who is averaging 13.2 points in 29 minutes per game, shooting 43.7 percent from the field on the year. Sophomore guard Matangiora Flavell has started all 10 games for Midland, averaging 9.8 points and is second on the team with 5.6 rebounds per game.  The Lady Chaps' 48.4 rebounds per game mark ranks 15th in the country which could play a pivotal role on Wednesday night.

Following Wednesday night's conference opener, the Lady Texans will return home on Saturday, Dec. 2 for a 2:00 p.m. tipoff against Frank Phillips College at the Texan Dome. Both games will be streaming live at spctexans.com and Michael Wiiest of KLVT Radio Levelland will call the courtside action.
