Falcons Softball Goes 2-2 at Juco Kickoff Classic

Daytona State softball opened the year going 2-2 at the Juco Kickoff Classic in Clearwater, FL this past weekend. 

Saturday

After a rough game one against Northwest Florida State, losing 13-1, the Falcons bounced back and grabbed a 12-4 win over Hillsborough.  Amayia Hernandez led DSC in the win, going 4-4 with two homeruns, a double, four runs scored, and seven RBI's.  Adriana Onessimo went 2-3 with four runs scored on the game.  Kadrianna Grinstead, Jael Wilde, and Cristina Penney all collected two hits in the game as well.  Madison Mitzel earned her first win on the season in three innings of work, with Emma Ream completing the game with three innings of relief.

Sunday

On day two, DSC scratched out a win in game one against East Georgia State, 8-7.  After jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning, two errors in the bottom half led to four EGSC runs.  The Falcons chipped away to tie the game 4-4 in the top of the fifth but again EGSC responded with three runs of their own.  Down 7-5 in the top of the seventh, Daytona State rallied for three runs, highlighted by a two run double from Rylee KonowalchukMadison Mitzel then closed the door in the bottom of the seventh, collecting her second win in 5.1 innings of relief work.  Jael Wilde, Brianna Weimer, and Konowalchuk all had two hits in the game with Wilde and Onessimo scoring twice each.

 

In the second game of the day, DSC raced out to a 3-0 lead with back-to-back homeruns from Hernandez and Wilde.  However, poor defensive play gave Parkland six runs right back in the bottom of the first with the Falcons dropping the game 7-4.  Mariah Rivera went the distance in the circle, allowing only two earned runs.

 

Daytona State will be back in action at home on Friday and Saturday.
