Chiefs wrap up season at Region Tournament

(Palos Hills, IL) - Waubonsee Community College's Men's Tennis team wrapped up their 2021 season at the Region IV Tournament over the weekend. Hosted by Moraine Valley Community College, singles play was held on Friday, while doubles action was played on Sunday in the southwest suburbs. Coach Warren Harris' Chiefs had one individual place third, and three other fourth place finishes over the two-day tournament. 

The Chiefs' top performer was sophomore Leo Barzi who finished third at number four singles. Seeded fourth in his bracket, the Batavia High School alumnus downed fifth-seeded Jacob Terveer from Sauk Valley Community College 7-6 in the first set, taking the tie breaker 7-1. Barzi then won the second set 6-1 to advance to the second round where he fell 6-2, 6-1 to top-seeded Kenny Hermann from the College of Lake County. Barzi went on to rally to defeat Moraine Valley's James Coan for third place. After Coan easily took the first set 6-0, Barzi narrowly won the second set 7-6 by winning a tie breaker 7-2. Barzi rode that momentum into the tie breaking third set winning it handily 10-3.

Bennet Piotrowski finished fourth at number one singles. Seeded fourth, Piotrowski topped fifth-seeded Yianni Livieratos from Moraine Valley 6-1 and 6-2 in the first round. He then fell to Prairie State College's Victor Dieltens, the top seed in the number one singles bracket 6-0 and 6-1. Second-seeded Mike Sims from Lake County later knocked off Piotrowski 6-1 and 6-1 in the third place match.

Briggs Kremski placed fourth at number three singles as well. The third-seeded Kremski defeated sixth-seeded David Souza from Moraine Valley in the first round. The Yorkville native then fell to second-seeded Hesley Mafasare from Prairie State 6-3 and 6-1, before losing the third place match 6-1 and 6-3 to fourth-seeded Mitch Ludewig from the College of DuPage.

Piotrowski also teamed up with his brother Greyson to finish fourth in number one doubles play. The duo was seeded fourth in their bracket and took on the fifth-seeded tandem of Moraine Valley's Livieratos and Souza, winning their first round match 6-2 and 7-5. The Marmion Academy graduates later squared off against the top-seeded team of Dieltens and Richard Ngwarwi from Prairie State dropping their second round match in three sets. The Piotrowski brothers won the first set 6-3 before Deiltens and Ngwarwi won the second set 6-0. The favorites then prevailed in the tie breaking third set 10-3 to take the match. Sauk Valley's number one doubles pairing of Preston Engel and Daniel Ferguson, seeded third in the bracket, downed the Piotrowski's 6-3 and 6-3 in the third place match.

Greyson Piotrowski, seeded sixth in the number two singles bracket, lost his opening match to the third-seeded Ferguson. The sophomore from Sauk Valley edged Piotrowski 7-6 in the first set, winning the tie breaker 7-2 before taking the second set 6-3. The Chiefs' number two doubles team of Kremski and Barzi also were eliminated in the first round, narrowly falling to Sauk Valley's fourth-seeded tandem of Zach Wallace and Terveer. The fifht-seeded duo of Kremski and Barzi prevailed 6-2 in the opening set before losing 6-4 in the second set. Wallace and Terveer then won the match by winning the tie breaking third set 10-6.
