Volleyball Kicks Off 2019 Campaign

The Pensacola State volleyball team kicked off their 2019 campaign this past weekend.

Their first match of the season was a five set thriller against Marshalltown Community College that they lost 3-2. Marshalltown needed extra points to take the first set 27-25 and the two teams alternated wins before the Pirates fell in the fifth set 15-12. Freshman Brook-Lynn Sandford led PSC hitters with 18 kills while sophomore Nicole Woods provided great defense with 15 digs in the match.

The Pirates then traveled to Snead State for a four game tournament on Friday and Saturday. The offense never really found their groove in the game and they dropped the first match of the tournament against Snead State 3-0.

Next up they lost a close five set match against Lawson State Community College. Sandford again led the offense with 17 kills while Reilly Landreneau recorded 30 digs.

On Saturday the Pirates fell to Gadsden State 3-0 before bouncing back with a victory against Andrew College. The whole roster saw action in the 3-0 sweep with Beaudine Verweij recording a game high 11 kills.

Head coach Jennie Belarmino said, "The team made huge strides over the weekend with our communication and they are starting to feel comfortable with who they are playing next to on the court. I am looking forward to a tough week of practice and us working on our offense and blocking. Brook-Lynn has been crucial to the success of our offense as she is attacking the ball at full speed and she has been hard to defend."
