COCKING HAS IMPRESSIVE BLUE DRAGON DEBUT

Freshman Louise Cocking posted the second highest finish and second-best time by a Hutchinson Community College women's cross country runner in the history of the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic on Friday night.

Cocking's impressive Blue Dragon debut helped her team to a third-place finish at the fifth-annual Masterson Twilight at Fun Valley.

Cocking finished fourth overall to lead Hutchinson. That finish is surpassed only by Lisayo Ewoi's second-place showing two years ago. Cocking's time of 19 minutes, 6.1 seconds is second to Ewoi's time of 18:38.28 set in 2018. Cocking also posted the 15th overall fastest time in Masterson Twilight history, a three-time race.

The Blue Dragons finished third of five teams to post scores in the 2020 season opener. Cloud County edged Cowley for the women's team championship 35-52. The Thunderbirds had four runners in the Top 10. Hutchinson scored 59 points, followed by Dodge City with 92 and Barton with 114.

Hutchinson had two runners place in the Top 10 and four in the Top 20.

Sophomore Sheila Too finished seventh overall on Friday night, beating her freshman time by nearly 57 seconds. Too ran a time of 19:55.8 on Friday, one of eight runners to break the 20-minute mark.

Sophomore Megan Miller also blitzed her freshman Masterson time on Friday with a 17th-place showing in a time of 20:17.2. Miller bested her freshman time by 1 minute, 26 seconds.

The other Blue Dragon in the Top 20 – the Masterson Individual Top 20 received T-Shirts – was freshman Izzy Wheeler, who placed 17th with a time of 20:43.1 in her Blue Dragon debut.

Freshman Noel Hidalgo rounded out the Blue Dragon team score with a 28th-place showing in 21:23.1. Freshman Jurney Yung was 37th in 22:40.5.

Cowley's Lubna Suied became the Masterson Twilight's first women's repeat champion. Suied dominated the field with a time of 18:24.9, the fifth-fastest time in Masterson Twilight history. She beat her freshman-winning time by 16.1 seconds.

The Blue Dragons will next compete at the Muthama-Rogers Invitational at Bethel College in North Newton on September 19.
