Wasson Delivers Closing 79 for Chargers at Augustana Highland Classic

ROCK ISLAND — Freshman Ellie Wasson posted a final-round 7-over-par 79 as she tied for 15th to lead the Carl Sandburg College women's golf team at the Augustana Highland Classic this weekend.

Wasson's strong finish made her the biggest mover up the leaderboard in Saturday's final round, as she jumped up 15 places following an opening 91 on Friday. Wasson shot a 2-over 38 on the front nine Saturday, including a birdie on the par-5 sixth hole at Highland Springs.

Sandburg finished the tournament in eighth place with a two-day total of 740 (376-364), ending up 18 shots ahead of four-year program St. Ambrose. Sophomore Anna Duden placed 33rd for the Chargers with rounds of 93 and 94, and freshman Lainey Jensen was a shot behind in 34th with scores of 93 and 95. Sophomore Olivia Schwingle (99-96—195) tied for 40th.

Host Augustana won by 40 shots over Illinois College with a 36-hole score of 602. The Vikings' Avery Frick was medalist with rounds of 70 and 75 to win by seven strokes.
