Highland Men Fall in KJCCC Battle at Johnson County

It was a battle for supremacy in the KJCCC on Monday night between the #4 Highland Men's basketball team and #8 Johnson County as the Cavaliers played host to the Top 10 showdown.

Each team looking to take control of the KJCCC race for the Conference title it was a battle from horn to horn but a double figure lead established by Johnson County with just under six minutes left in the game proved to be enough for them to take the win 75-67. The loss sends Highland to 19-2 on the season and 1-1 in KJCCC action, while it was also the fourth straight loss to the Cavaliers.

After Johnson County took the initial lead of the contest a three-point play by Luiz Machado Jr. gave Highland their first lead of the evening at 13-12 with 10:01 left in the first half. The lead was short lived and Highland would only lead for a brief other moment in the first half and entered halftime down 34-31 despite a late surge to end the first half.

Scotties opened the second half strong has Taiveyhon Mason had a three-point play early to tie the game at 39-39 and Highland worked to their largest lead at 43-39 with 14:33 to go in the contest. Johnson County pushed back and tied the game at 48-48 and then scored the next two buckets to regain the lead and held it the rest of the way pushing it to double figures at the 5:48 mark and going on to take the 75-67 win.

Highland in the loss saw their opponent shot 52.8% from the floor and finish with four double figure scorers, while the Scotties shot 39.7% from the floor and only had 10 turnovers in the matchup.

Mason led Highland with a game high 22 points, adding four rebounds and five steals, while Tristen Hull had his tenth straight double figure performance with 16 points and five rebounds. Jaquan Daniels tallied 14 points and had six rebounds.

Highland will look to get back in the win column quickly has they have a quick turnaround hitting the court again on Wednesday, January 30th at home in a KJCCC contest against Hesston (10-11) at 7:30pm.
