Baseball Records Series Sweep with TCS Post Grad

Baseball Records Series Sweep with TCS Post Grad

The Coastal Bend College baseball team has been a torrid 13 consecutive game win streak entering a five game series with TCS Post Graduate Academy.  TCS is a baseball training group for high school graduates who are looking to improve their game and improve their collegiate recruiting and professional signing opportunities.  Current Cougar catcher Cody Lee is a TCS Alumnus.

During the five games, CBC showed that this current win streak and their #4 NJCAA Division III ranking are not flukes.  They won all five of the games in several different fashion - coming from behind, holding off an opponent, playing "small ball", and crushing their opponent twice with the 10 run rule.  The series included heady defensive plays such a Joel Rodriguez's multiple diving catches in center field, and an ESPN worthy play by shortstop Mitchell Sexton; when he went behind the bag at second, slid into a ground ball so that he could come up throwing to nail the runner at first.

From the plate, in the field, and on the mound the Cougars did it all.

Game One

Michael Dinsdale would get the start for the Cougars and was in brilliant form through the first two innings, before giving up two runs in the third.  He was able to pitch himself out of a jam with TCS runners on 3rd and 2nd, to stop the bleeding.

The Cougars would scrape together runs in their half of the third, fourth and fifth innings.  The top of fifth saw TCS chase Dinsdale with their game tieing third run  CBC would bring on Mason Foster to retire the side.  Foster would give up another TCS run in the top of the sixth and left the Cougars looking up at a 4-3 deficit on the scoreboard.  Sexton got a single to start the bottom of the sixth, he would move to second on a Rodriguez walk.  Two on and two out was the stage for Jordan Goechenour who ripped a ball into the right center field gap.  There was no question the game would be tied, Sexton scored easily.  The question was would Rodriguez, CBC's lead-off hitter make it from first.  Third base and Head Coach Brian Bauerle never hesitated sending Rodriguez home.  The throw was a split second late and Rodriguez sealed the run with a head first slide and put the Cougars back on top 5-4.  Foster retired TCS in the top of the seventh earning the save and the Cougars' 14th win in a row.

Game Two

As dramatic as game one was, game two was never in question.  CBC throttled the TCS pitching from the first pitch to the last inning.  The Cougars would pound out five runs to start the game,.   From that point, the TCS pitchers were forced to work the edges of the plate.  If it wasn't perfect a Cougar would tag it, or it was too far outside and the CBC hitter would jog down to first.

When the dust settled CBC had won their 15th in a row, as Colton Getchsman went the distance giving up one run on three hits while striking out three to run his record to 3-0 on the year.  The most important thing Getchsman did is allow the remaining pitching staff to rest and be ready for next three contests as CBC won 11-1.

Game Three

Bo Gonzales would take the mound for the Cougars on Tuesday afternoon.  Gonzales would be shaky early, allowing TCS base runners to reach 3rd and 2nd before striking out back to back hitters to retire the side.  Beside that first inning, he was steady giving up only one run over four innings of work with six strikeouts.  The CBC bullpen did the rest scattering one more run to TCS over the next three innings.

Gonzales, who hit in the DH spot in addition to his pitching duties would go 4 for 4 on the day to help his cause.  Ruben Sepulveda would get the offensive party started in the first with a two run home run that landed deep into the south Texas shrub trees in right field.  TCS Alum Cody Lee would treat his former team poorly, when he launched a ball over the Joe Hunter Field scoreboard in left center for a three run bomb in the fifth inning.  The Cougar bats would pound out 12 hits and eight RBI's to earn CBC's "sweet 16th" win in a row 8-2.

One of the highlights of the game came in the third.  With TCS threatening, Kyler Bromstead tracked down a certain multiple RBI ball in the gap in right center.  His throw from the fence to cut-off man Gochenour was perfect, the relay to home and waiting catcher Lee was even better.  Lee's block of the plate combined with the two perfect throws secured the out and ended any hopes of a TCS comeback.

Game Four

The second game on Tuesday as another explosive game for the CBC offense.  The Cougars would strike first with three in the first and three in the second, to jump out to a commanding six run lead.  Tyler Dick would take care of his part on the mound, before giving way to the bullpen in the fourth.  The Cougars would plate seven more runs over the course of the fourth and fifth innings to win their 17th in a row 13-3.

Game Five

Sepulveda would get the start in the series finale, and he was brilliant working four winnings of shutout baseball, scattering three hits.  Josh Burnett jump started the Cougar offense with perfectly executed push bunt down the first base line.  That hit moved Rodriguez into scoring position, and he would score on Gochenour's next at bat.  Sexton recorded his second homerun of the series to secure a 6-3 victory and the team's 18th consecutive win.
