LADY PIONEERS ADVANCE ON FIRST DAY OF TOURNAMENT

The Volunteer State Lady Pioneers advanced on the first day of the TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII Tournament today as they were able to defeat the Lady Eagles of Dyersburg State by a 78-71 final.  The Lady Pioneers advance to play the #1 seed Lady Senators in quarterfinal play on Saturday.

The Lady Pioneers took the lead after the first quarter of play, but Dyersburg would take a five point advantage into the half 37-32.  Volunteer would trail for most of the second half until Aliyah Miller would make two free throws with 1:47 to play.  The Lady Pioneers would hold Dyersburg scoreless for the 3:15 of the game in securing the win.

Shalaya Armstead would lead Volunteer in scoring with 19 points while Miller was right behind with 18 points.  Tatyana Lavender and Xavia Williams would also reach double figures with 15 & 11.  Armstead would delivera double double as she pulled down 14 rebounds and Miller would lead with nine assists.  Williams would be credited with seven steals in the contest.

Tasia Bland would lead the Lady Eagles with a double-double as she scored 22 points and had 14 rebounds.  Morgan Terry and Joslynn Basemore would also score double figures with 14 and 11 points.
