The Highland Scotties five game win streak was broken on a last second break-away layup against conference rival Johnson County on Saturday losing 70-72.
The 1st half saw the Cavaliers shooting 40% from behind the arc making six threes to the Scotties two. Highland could not get in their normal rhythm going into halftime down 30-31.
Five minutes into the 2nd half, the Scotties took a five point lead after an aggressive lay-up by
Ryan Haskins and jump shots by
Kevin Perry and
Alonzo Williams. The Cavaliers Mat Baldeh got hot and scored 13 points off the bench helping Johnson to a nine point lead 51-60 with six minutes left in the game.
Four minutes left, down by seven,
Alonzo Williams grabbed an offensive rebound laying it in the basket with the and-one, making his free-throw, closing the gap 56-60.
Another nine point lead was earned by the Cavs 65-56. A Haskins three and a jumper by
Kevin Perry helped chip away at the deficit now a 63-68 score with the Cavs leading. Mason committed a controversial turn-over with 1:19 left in the game but turned around and sunk a three late and made the game-tying layup with four seconds remaining. The Cavs quickly inbound the ball to Lapurdus and he traveled the length of the court in four seconds and dished it off to Baldeh who scored the go-ahead bucket with .4 seconds left in the contest. Highland was unable to get off a last second shot and the Cavaliers went on to win 72-70, serving HCC their first KJCCC loss of the season.
All five starters for the Scotties scored in double-digits but the Cavaliers bench outscored the Scotties 18-8, making a big difference in the game.
Ryan Haskins led the Scotties with 14 points while
Holden Redparth and
Taiveyhon Mason both added in 13 a piece.
Kevin Perry and
Alonzo Williams each finished with 11 points.
Highland men are now 16-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The team will travel to Hesston (13-5, 1-1) on Wednesday, January 31st with a 7:30PM game time.
