Lakers Men's Lacrosse Wins Home Opener

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. – The Finger Lakes Community College Men's Lacrosse team grabbed their first win of the season on Saturday against the Union County College Owls. This was the Lakers' home opener. The Lakers won 22-12.

The Lakers were the first on the board on Saturday. It was a shot up the middle by Alex Burley who was assisted by Sutherland Thayer. Quickly after, the Owls answered back. The next goal of the quarter was scored by Burley again off of a turnover from Union, this time with Trae Papke assisting. The Owls were right behind them again, and scored to tie it up. Union found themselves with a lead soon after. After numerous shots, Papke found the back of the net to tie it back up, 3-3. A little over a minute later, Tyler Joslyn scored his first of the game to put the Lakers back in the lead. He was followed by Thayer this time with a little over three and a half minutes left in the quarter. A minute later, Burley ripped a shot that was a save, but Schuyler Bredesen picked it back up and made a shot. The final goal of the quarter was scored by Bredesen again after another shot from Burley. The Lakers had the lead 7-3 going into the second quarter.

The second quarter started with a faceoff violation from Union County, which gave the Lakers the ball. Thirty seconds in, Thayer scored his second goal of the game, assisted by Burley. Jake Geiss then won the faceoff as Thayer scooped up the ground ball. A few shots were taken, and a minute later, Joslyn scores another for the Lakers. Joslyn scored another goal after a shot from Burley. Joslyn was assisted by Bredesen. The Lakers were on a roll. The next goal of the quarter was from Jacob Harnischfeger assisted by Bredesen. This put the score at 11-3 in favor of the Lakers. The next goal was from the Owls. After a good clear attempt, they went in a scored their fourth of the game. Joslyn answered back for the Lakers' twelfth goal and was assisted by Burley. With four minutes and fifty-five seconds left, Alexander Salone scored his first of the game. Union went on to score two more goals in a row, and that would take them to halftime. The Lakers still had the lead, 13-6.

Coming back from the half, Burley started the scoring with 13:28 left. Not even a minute later, the Owls answered back. They scored two more in a row before Bredesen scored another one, with an assist from Papke. Burley was next unassisted. After almost three minutes, Bredesen found the back of the net again, this time with an assist from Harnischfeger. Keeping up his hot streak, Bredesen scored again a minute later, this time from Joslyn. With under two minutes left in the third quarter, Burley scored again unassisted. That would wrap up the third quarter with the Lakers leading 19-9.

Bredesen started out the scoring in the fourth quarter. He scored with 13:47 left after a clear attempt and a pass from Joslyn. Two minutes later, Papke found his opening and scored with a pass from Burley. Union won a quick faceoff and took the ball down to score just seconds later. They scored two more before Joslyn scored unassisted with 2:55 left. He would finish out the scoring for the game and the Lakers came out with a victory, 22-12.

Game leaders for the Lakers were Bredesen with six goals and two assists, Joslyn with five goals, two assists, and two ground balls, Burley with five goals, three assists, and a ground ball, Sean Delaney with three ground balls and three caused turnover, and goalies Brandon Wayne and Jacob Borrelli with nine saves each.

The Lakers will play again on Wednesday, March 11th at Tompkins Cortland Community College. They will play at 4:00pm.
