Defense Shines in Home Opener for Lakers

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College men's basketball team hosted Monroe Community College Wednesday evening for the team's annual season opener. Freshman Davion Jones (Rochester, N.Y./Monroe) led the scoring for the Lakers, dropping 13 points and adding 5 rebounds to his stat line. Jones was efficient from beyond the arc, converting 50% of his opportunities. High school and now college teammate Jaquan Shears (Rochester, N.Y./Monroe) followed closely, putting together a well-rounded performance with 11 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and a pair of steals.

Freshman Kyle Slywka (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) made his defensive presence felt, contributing 3 blocks and 3 steals to the team's total. Alongside his defensive performance, Slywka added 8 points and hauled in 6 rebounds to contribute on both sides of the court.

The defensive standout of the game was freshman Andrew Edwards-Ferrell (Rochester, N.Y./U Prep) who thwarted several scoring chances for the Tribunes, swatting 6 shots on the night. On the offensive end, Edwards-Ferrell added 8 points to his tally. From the bench, sophomore Marvin Reed Jr. (Durham, N.C./Faith Assembly) played an efficient 13 minutes, going 2-2 beyond the arc and chipping in a total 8 points on the night.

Despite the loss, the Lakers will look to regroup and work on preparing for their next game at home against the SUNY ESF Mighty Oaks. The Lakers will tipoff against the Mighty Oaks on Tuesday, November 7th at 6 PM on the Putt Moore Court.
