Sussex Goes Toe to Toe with Region 19 Champion

The Sussex lacrosse program experienced a humbling defeat in 2019, the schools first season building a club program, losing to Mercer County Community College 29-2.

Wednesday the 'Landers showed Region 19 how far they've come in a short period of time, giving up a goal with 30 seconds in regulation to lose to the 2019 champion 9-8.

The first half was the Sussex defenses best showing of the season. Griffen Rhodes, Dom Candeloro, and Matt Bruno continually pressured the ball and registered several caused turnovers while freshman goaltender Collin Miller seemed to be dialed in early making saves off the wet turf and creating transition opportunities for the Skylanders.

Goals by Dom Falleni, Grant Parker, and midfielder Brian Curley had both teams locked at 4-4 at the half.

Sussex and Mercer traded goals in the 3rd with Falleni hitting the back of the net again off a feed from Blake Dipple, and Nolan Waldron scoring unassisted.  The extra man unit did it's part with 2 goals in the 4th, while Parker scored off a beautiful feed by attackman Joe DeCeglia who caused a turnover and found the Newton alumn on the doorstep to knot the score at 8-8.

Untimely penalties hounded the Skylanders throughout the game, but the mandown unit and Miller held the Mercer squad in check.

The Skylanders will take on Nassau Community College, the number one team in the nation, in Long Island on April 13th.
